Ibiza in Springtime
If you rather go to the beach than discover the religious Spain during Easter I vote for Ibiza (Eivissa in Catalan). Ibiza is essentially a tourist island but, for those who don’t only look for discos and party, the island offers culture and nature. On 4 December 1999, UNESCO included the category Ibiza, Biodiversity and Culture in its World Heritage collection. Rent an apartment in Ibiza and discover all the beautiful sites that Ibiza offers you.
The declaration of Ibiza as a World Heritage site has been the ideal means of promoting Ibiza’s thousand-year-old culture and rich biodiversity. In the past few years Ibiza has experienced an increase in cultural, rural and sporting tourism, one of the island’s most solid focal points for the future.
The following sites have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list: the acropolis of Dalt Vila (the old town of Eivissa), the underwater posidonia meadows, which are the source of the rich marine biodiversity of the Pitiusas Islands, the Phoenician settlement of Sa Caleta and the Punic necropolis Puig des Molins , which contain the vestiges of the first settlements on the islands.
Dalt Vila is a veritable memorial to history. Its many strata of earth contain remnants of all the cultures that have inhabited the island, from the very first settlers in the bay of the city of Ibiza , to the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and Moors, up to the Christian conquest led by the King of Aragón in the 13th century. The architecture, great beauty and simplicity of the Old Town have significantly influenced the colonial constructions of the New World.
The meadows of posidonias –phanerogamic sea plants native to the Mediterranean– are the source of the beauty and transparency of the waters of the Pitiusan Sea. Their conservation is therefore essential, as the great biodiversity in the waters of Ibiza and Formentera directly depend on their strength and vitality. Like the coral reefs of tropical seas, the posidonia meadows in Ibiza and Formentera are an asset to world heritage, the loss of which would be a disaster for our ecosystem.
But you are also looking for beaches, aren’t you? Here are some beaches I recommend you near the city of Ibiza:
Ses Figueretes
The beach of Ses Figueretes is located in the area of the same name and is made up of a set of different coves and small beaches, which are joined by small rocky areas. This is without doubt the definitive Eivissa City beach, because it is in the part of the town nearest the city centre and can be reached by public transport, on foot or by bicycle.
It is 450 metres long and up to 25 metres wide, which makes it ideal for low-risk sunbathing and swimming, as the beach is sheltered from strong winds. On one side of this beach is the Ses Pitiüses walkway, a pedestrian area lined with hotels and other complementary services. In this regard, Ses Figueretes is a comfortable beach for tourists. The seabed is shallow and sandy in some of these beaches and rocky in others.
Platja d’en Bossa
700 metres of the 2,700 metre-long Platja d’en Bossa are part of Eivissa City. This area begins where Ses Figueretes ends and is ideal for sunbathing and swimming relatively risk-free. As it is easy to get to and has a wide range of services on offer, it is the perfect place for people looking for a wide range of sporting activities, as well as all kinds of tourist comforts.
The width of Platja d’en Bossa varies between 20 and 25 metres and the seabed is sandy and not too deep: at about 50 metres from the shore, the water is approximately one metre deep.Due to the fact that it lies open to the east, the beach is exposed to the stronger easterly winds and onshore currents from the south.
Talamanca
Located in the bay of the same name, Talamanca is a shallow, sheltered beach with fine natural sand. It is 900 metres long (the longest in the municipality of Eivissa) and is between 25 and 30 metres in width.Besides being in a closed bay and having shallow waters, another of the advantages of Talamanca is that it is very close to the city centre, which means it can be reached by public transport or bicycle.
Talamanca offers a wide range of services, which makes it a wonderful place to sunbathe or swim risk-free or take up sailing.Another of the tourist attractions of Talamanca is the possibility of reaching the beach by way of Eivissa City port, using the sea transport service, popularly known as ‘the Talamanca boat’.
