Barcelona: Guided tours of the anti-aircraft batteries on the Turó de la Rovira
If you are in Barcelona these days and you want to deep into history you can discover the city’s anti-aircrafts batteries. Barcelona was bombed by the Franco’s airplanes during the Spanish Civil War and the Barcelona City Council, in recalling this event, wants to remember the civilian population that suffered the tragic consequences of the bombing. The City History Museum, together with the Horta-Guinardó District and the Agència de Promoció del Carmel, has organised guided tours of the anti-aircraft batteries on the Turó de la Rovira.
The tour lasts one and a half hours and aims to tell those who go on it about the history of Turó de la Rovira and the air raids against Barcelona.
“What we will do during the tour is explain how the Republican authorities installed the batteries on the hilltop to prevent the bombing of the city. We will also talk about the shanty towns that grew up here under the Franco dictatorship with the arrival of migrants from other parts of Spain,” says the City History Museum’s director, Antoni Nicolau.
Everyone who goes on the tour will be able to see the remains of the platforms where the batteries stood, as well as the shelters in which the Republican soldiers took refuge during the enemy bombing.
The tour also offers an unrivalled view of the city. From the hilltop, you can enjoy a panoramic view including the sea front, the Agbar Tower, the Sagrada Família, Montjuïc Park, Sant Andreu and even Montgat and the airport.
