Glamour and movies at the San Sebastian International Film Festival

If you like movies, glamour and beautiful cities you have a date in San Sebastian. The San Sebastian International Film Festival opens its doors next thursday until September 29th and will celebrate its 55th consecutive edition with the same enthusiasm felt the day it first saw the light on September 21st 1953. Richard Gere and Liv Ullmann will receive the Donostia Award this year bringing to the festival the Hollywood atmosphere that always have this type of events, other famous actors such as Viggo Mortensen and Demi Moore will also attend the event to present their latest works at the Festival opening and closing galas: Eastern Promises and Flawless, respectively.

Sixteen films will compete at the Official Selection of the 55th San Sebastian International Film Festival. David Cronenberg, Wayne Wang, Hans Weingartner or Manuel Poirier are some of the directors with well-known careers whose new films will compete for the first time for the Golden Shell, among other official awards presented at San Sebastian. Others like Gracia Querejeta, Iciar Bollain, Nick Broomfield , John Sayles or Simon Staho are repeating their participation in the Festival competition.

This year the Festival will review the career of Henry King, one of the film-makers who laid the ethical and aesthetic foundations of Hollywood. Then Fiebre Helada (Cold Fever) – the new Nordic cinema- will offer a selection of films made in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Iceland over the last 10 years.

The list of personalities making an appearance at the Festival ever since its early days is endless. Their names have given San Sebasti·n Back its cosmopolitan splendour and have bestowed it with a certain dose of glamour, always connected to fine filmmaking. Federico Fellini, Gloria Swanson, Alfred Hitchcock, Kirk Douglas, Jean-Luc Godard, Deborah Kerr, Leslie Caron, King Vidor, Monica Vitti, Anthony Mann, Bernardo Bertolucci, Anhony Quinn, Audrey Hepburn, Franco Zeffirelli, Francis Ford Coppola, Fritz Lang, Francisco Rabal, Robert Altman, Howard Hawks, Nicholas Ray, Elizabeth Taylor, FranÁois Truffaut, Orson Welles, Fernando Rey, Luis Buñuel, Steven Spielberg, Joseph von Sternberg, Imperio Argentina, Richard Burton, Gina Lollobrigida, Harrison Ford, Nikita Mikhalkov, Pedro Almodóvar, Victoria Abril, Sergio Leone, Roman Polanski, Sam Peckinpah, Jacqueline Bisset, George Peppard, Louise Rainer, Alberto Sordi, Sydney Pollack, Peter O’Toole, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, Charlton Heston, Glenn Close, Anjelica Huston, Sophia Loren, Stanley Donen, Mel Gibson, Keanu Reaves, Matt Dillon and Ethan Coen, Antonio Banderas, Bertrand Tavernier… And they are only a few of the celebrities that have come with their their films and have left an indelible stamp on the Festival’s memory.
