Teguise Carnival
Its the time of year when it seems carnivals are spreading like wildfire around Spain and Lanzarote is not to be left behind with its Teguise Festival. The slightly demonic celebration involves devil-costumed characters chasing after adults and children with goat-skinned batons! This bizarre ritual stretches back to as early as the 17th century and were a regular feature of the Corpus Christi celebrations. The Church eventually sanctioned the far from holy event and demoted it to carnival status. So if whilst navigating the island’s black rocky landscape, you see men with goat’s horns, cow’s head and a drooling tongue, you’ll know whats going on!
