Semana Santa in Seville

Probably one of the most lavish religious celebrations in Spain takes place from 9-16 April every year and nowhere does it better than Seville. Thousands of people of all ages will pour onto the tiny streets to remember “The Passion”. Seville really goes to town of this event with religious and community groups from all over the city spending weeks preparing for the highlight of the Christian calendar. The solemn processions leave from the cathedral at noon every day and culminate with a spectacular midnight cavalcade that continues into the early hours of the morning. The procession can take up to eight hours as there are over 100 groups representing different districts of the town. The mix of religious fervor, crowds, flamenco and the costumes is deeply intoxicating and is sure to leave any visitor moved by what they have seen. There is perhaps no other more dramatic or powerful insight into the Spanish soul than this so don’t miss it. Renting a flat around a Seville is also one of the most realisitic accommodation options because hotel and hostel are invariable fully-booked during this time.
