Cap de Creus National Park

Cap de Creus is one of the most windswept but beautiful areas of the Costa Brava. A peninsula in the north of the Costa Brava, it sits on geological rocks that are more than 450 million years old and since 1984, has been considered a natural protected open area under the category of natural park. It covers the municipal areas of El Port de la Selva, La Selva de Mar, Llançà, Cadaqués, Palau-saverdera, Pau, Roses and Vilajuïga. It has a very abrupt coast, with deep waters, and plenty of tiny islands, very high cliffs, reefs of rocks made stark by erosion. Meadows and forests feature inland with small hidden bays with clear blue water, often only accessible from the sea. As the easternmost point of the Iberian Peninsula, it is notorious for its flow of migratory birds. The singular nature of some of the rocks is associated with the shapes of animals which over time have become mythical constructs, especially the eagle of Tudela and the lion of Cap Gros. Note that the rock on the islet of Culleró, in front of the small bay of the same name, inspired Salvador Dalí in his work “The Great Masturbator”.
