Malaga’s Roman Past in Ardales
Malaga may not be known for its history but in the pretty village of Ardales, you can find sone of the richest historical heritage in the Costa del Sol. The village is situated at the base of a precipitous hill and has some delightful winding streets and whitewashed houses. A good option to enjoy its charm is a walk along the course of the Turón River. Flowing from the northern slope of Sierra de las Nieves down to the Guadalteba and Guadalhorce Rivers, the Turón waters are inhabited by different fish species such as carp, barbel or Iberian nase, while otters and badgers live by the side of the river, as well as herons and several duck species. From here, you can cross the Roman bridge, La Molina, over the river. Built in the 1st century A.D. with sandstone ashlars, this flat bridge retains three round arches and was formerly paved with cobble stones. While visiting the village, there are various archaeological sites and fortresses to enjoy accompanied by some impressive views over the Sierra de Alcaparaín, Desfiladero de Los Gaitanes and Caminito del Rey.
