Cáceres Medieval Haunts

15th century arch in Cáceres

Cáceres is one for those seeking to delve deep into Spanish culture and is one of Spain’s many prestigious UNESCO World Heritage towns. Monuments, Renaissance palaces, fortresses and medieval churches combine to form a rich and extremely varied jewel. The town is split into 4 main areas - the Jewish Quarter, the Old Quarter, the Centre and the Outlying areas. We would also recommend a visit by night, when you can enjoy the beautiful illumination. The pick of the lot is probably the Iglesia de Santa Maria which is Romanesque in style but leans towards the Gothic period. Also of note is the Episcopal Palace opposite which displays characteristics of various cultures that have made Cáceres their home. Don’t miss the traces of Arabic Art such as the cictern at Veletas Palace and the evidence of the Jewish community that lived there.
