A particular vision of life in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
The Modern Art Atlantic Centre-CAAM holds the exhibition The Threshold of Death (Los Dinteles de la muerte) by Alejandro Reino. If you are visiting Las Palmas de Gran Canaria around this time and until 28th January, I recommend you to go an see Alejandro Reino’s pieces.
The Canarian artist transmits a particular vision of life from the wisdom of maturity through photographic montages and objects captured by his camera. These are photographs and are pictures at the same time. A gallery full of pieces of life, full of ordinary events, mingled with elements which take part in the activity of the human factcon, in order to create a composition, a picture.
Each one of them is a piece of life. It is not a sequence of life, it does not intend to be a sensible anthropologic or ethnographic research either. It does not try to be a homage to every stage in life. It is simply life, just as it is perceived by the artist.
It deals about close and vitalist, positive and hopeful human figures, mingled with architectonic elements whose reiterative appearance is a process of blending between the ephimeral and the everlasting where the mystic atmosphere, artistic legacy of the Baroquian style, as a great admirer, collects part of its technique. In a world like ours, full of shallowness, full of independent and hermetic niches where we try to isolate ourselves in order no to become infected from other human beings, where due to the developing process we come to sacrifice our living together, each of these tresholds is an open space which breaks jails without searching for labels or aesthetic urges. They do not intend to stablish principles. They are just lights, lighthouses for something as simple as life. Each character, each element, each sahdow, each light has been painted. It is the trompe-l oeil which the artist cheats us with, it is a new way of painting, taking advantage of the new technologies, a new usage of digitalization, a field which opens new ways of expression of art. But the spectator must not let be cheated, or must it?.
