Flamenco and Shakespeare meet in A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Antonio Carmona presents his vision of A Missummer Night’s Dream. The lead singer of Ketama, a flamenco band which amazed the world with its fussions of rock, bossa nova, jazz, flamenco and salsa and dissapeared suddenly when its members decided to try their artistics, is responsible for the musical production of ‘El Sueño de Una Noche de Verano’ a youthful, magical and dynamic play, where actors also perform the songs composed by Carmona. This play will open the 24th Málaga Theatre Festival, from 12 January to 3 February, gathering the shows created by many national and international companies and staging them at the city’s theatres. El Sueño de Una Noche de Verano will be on stage in the Teatro Cervantes January 12th, 23rd and 14th.
The main idea of this version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare is to transport the concept of the play to the Mediterranean culture. If the original unfolds over a summer night inside a magical forest, it is undoubtedly because the playwright is representing the idyllic location of the English summertime: the forest, the mountain, the countryside… By adapting it to the Spanish culture, the forest becomes the idyllic location of the Mediterranean summer: the beach. A beach which is also inhabited by magical beings. The creatures that previously emerged from inside a forest now emerge from the depths of the sea.
The music and songs, specially composed for this version, are particularly prominent, not only because they give life to the scenes but also because they intensify the Mediterranean feeling that envelops the story.
