Grec Festival

Barcelona’s ever popular Grec Festival gets underway this weekend until the 5th August welcoming a wide variety of cultural acts to the summer sun. The curtain raiser is the Sant Joan celebrations tonight which involves copious amounts of fireworks to welcome the summer. This year, highlights will include concerts by Teresa Parodi, Lila Downs and others plus a dance show by the CobosMika company. The Grec Festival goes back to 1976 when a group of actors, directors and writers put-on cultural shows in the Greek amphitheatre on Mount Montjuic. The theatre festival then became independently run until 1979, when the newly-formed democratic city authorities took over.
