St Antony’s Day
Menorca celebrates its Muslim heritage on 17th January in the old capital, Ciutadella. The statue of San Antonio is paraded through the streets followed by the mayor and other dignitaries. There is also a market where the fruits brought to Europe by the Ummayad Muslims from Damascus in the 9th century are sold. Although the Muslims were ousted by the Christian king in 1287, their gifts of dates, oranges and chestnuts are still cultivated still and can be sampled in San Antonio square after the procession.
