Summer in Santander
Another of Northern Spain’s great cities is Santander. If you’re tired of the tourist-filled environs of Southern Spain, then this could be the place for you. Elegant Santander extends over a wide bay with views of the Cantabrian Sea and its historic quarter includes a group of majestic buildings which are situated against an incredible natural backdrop of sea and mountains. Its marine and commercial tradition goes back hundreds of years with its main focal points today being the El Sardinero beach, the promenade and the La Magdalena peninsula. The cultural wealth of the Cantabrian capital is enriched with the passage of the Pilgrim’s Road to Santiago de Compostela and the neighbouring Altamira Caves, both of which have been declared World Heritage. Cantabria also has a beautiful interior - the region is dominated by the Picos de Europa with the Peña Vieja summit at 2,613 m tall forming the highest peak in the region. The rivers are short and full of water, given the high rainfall, and the waters that nourish the rivers from the melting ice up in the mountains.
