Spain’s autumn pleasures

Autumn is not when most people consider coming to Spain but in actual fact, its the perfect season for enjoying the beauty and magic of its forests. The trees change into shades of orange, red and gold, giving them a magical feeling as the last of the year’s sunny days disappear.

According to the Spanish Tourist board, Spain is the second most mountainous country in Europe and the best if the shady, leafy and moist woods can mainly be found amongst them in the north of Spain. The list is endless, although the most spectacular include the forests located in the Picos de Europa National Park and the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park; the Pedrosa beech forest in Segovia; the Montejo forest, one of the southernmost in Europe, situated in the Sierra del Rincón Mountains near Madrid, which has UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status. There’s also the Tejera Negra Nature Reserve in Guadalajara; the Señorío de Bértiz Nature Reserve in Navarre; and the beech forests in the volcanic area of La Garrotxa in Girona.

The local tourist offices can advise you on the best itineraries and excursions.
