San Miguel Bullfights in 2007

Keith Morley asks:

“Please advise dates of feria de san miguel sept 2007 and dates of bullfights.

Have not been able to determine the exact dates for 2007 from many websites relating to Seville.

Thank you”

Answer

I haven’t been able to find exact dates for Feria de San Miguel and I think is because the official schedule for the bullfights in Seville hasn’t been published yet. But, I can tell you that the Feria de San Miguel is generally set in the last weekend of September. You can check out the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla website to get updates on the official schedule and I also promise you to check it out once in a while to find out the exact dates and email them to you.

The Feria de San Miguel is celebrated at the Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza, one of the finest bullrings in Spain and one of the oldest and most important in the world. The construction began in 1749 of a circular ring on Baratillo hill to take the place of the rectangular bullring that was previously located there. Later, in 1761, Francisco Sánchez de Aragón and Pedro y Vicente de San Martín started to supervise the work and incorporate ochavas (each ochava being equivalent to four arches). The construction of the ring was completed in 1881; two thirds were constructed in stone, the rest in wood. Between 1914 and 1915 the stone grandstands were redone in brick under the direction of Sevillian architect Aníbal González. It has an impressive Baroque façade and was immortalized in Bizet’s Carmen. The arena accommodates 14,000 and, despite its size, the acoustics allow you to hear everything wherever you’re sitting. The main entrance is the Puerta del Príncipe (the Prince’s Gate) with beautiful 16th-century iron gates, originally from a convent, made by Pedro Roldán.

The Feria de San Miguel includes some stunning displays of horsemanship, bullfights and performances by the Real Escuela de Arte Ecuestre de Jerez (Jerez Royal Equestrian School). Flamenco singers, guitar players and dance shows usually complete the programme.
