Skiing in Sierra Nevada
If you have already visited the Catalan Pyrenees and want to go South for your skiing adventure, I recommend you the Sierra Nevada Ski Resort, located in Monachil, just 25 minutes by car from Granada. It is set in the Penibetico range and it has sign-posted slopes for all levels and excellent quality snow. It also has a cross-country skiing track, snow park with half-pipe and a recreational area for non-skiers, dogsled rides and night skiing on weekends. What else do you need? An apartment in Sierra Nevada and you are ready for another skiing break.
The Sierra Nevada Ski Resort hosted the Skiing World Championships in 1996 and is located within the Sierra Nevada National Park which has been declared Reserve of the Biosphere because of its great fauna and flora. The Sierra Nevada district borders with the Alpujarra and El Marquesado del Zenete. It is home to the highest peaks of the Iberian Peninsula. From the top of the Veleta and the Mulhacén peaks you can admire the Mediterranean Sea. A natural alpine paradise in the heart of Andalucia with mild summers and cold winters. Between its snow-covered peaks, its rivers and its forests we find villages full of charm, half way between the monumental city of Granada and the imposing massif of Sierra Nevada.
Many of the villages surrounding Sierra Nevada go back in time to Islamic farmhouses that depended on the capital, dedicated to the agriculture and the production of silk. The Muslim trace can be seen in the web of canals that collect the waters of the melting snow from the summits of Sierra Nevada to take them to the fertile plain.
